EL BARRANCO DE LA VIRGEN
Endemic plant species and the Canarina canariensis
The endemic flora consists of species that are unique to the Canary Islands, and not found anywhere else.
The setting for our finca, or country estate, is El Barranco de La Virgen , which boasts a unique and varied endemic biodiversity.
We feel a special affection for the Canary Island bellflower [Canarina canariensis], commonly known as the “bicácaro”. So much so that it forms part of our logo, and when you visit us you will see that it is much in evidence at our finca.
It typically has orange-red, bell-shaped flowers that attract birds and other pollinators. The plant has triangular, horned leaves, with serrated edges.
It is a symbol of the island’s endemic flora, and is mainly found in wooded areas and gorges. Its beauty and uniqueness make it a highlight of Gran Canaria’s gardens and natural landscapes.
However, due to a loss of habitat, it is considered to be a species at risk of extinction and therefore has protected status.
Flowering period: annually November – April
